Jacques Coulon (born January 15, 1942 in Mareil-en-France ) is a former French racing driver .

Career

Jacques Coulon studied in the 1960s, mathematics and worked as a university lecturer before he went into motorsports. He started in 1968 in the newly created Formula France and was a teammate of François Laccarrau in the young Martini team in 1970 . Behind his team mate, he finished the season on a Martini MK4 in second place in the overall standings. In 1971 he switched to Formula 3 . After a season with Martini, he signed a contract with the Swiss racing team Filipinetti for 1972 . It was a successful year that ended with third place behind Roger Williamson and Colin Vandervell in the Shell F3 series of the British Formula 3 Championship .

The 1973 Formula 2 year was severely disrupted by the end of the Scuderia Filipinetti. The unexpected death of Georges Filipinetti in May 1973 caused the breakup of the racing team and Coulon had to look for a new team for the rest of the season. With Brian Lewis Racing he contested the remaining races and finished fifth in the championship behind Jean-Pierre Jarier , Jochen Mass , Patrick Depailler and Vittorio Brambilla .

In autumn 1973 there was speculation in the French specialist press about Coulon's entry into Formula 1 . The mentioned engagement with March Engineering for the automobile world championship 1974 did not materialize. Instead, he drove for another year in Formula 2 for March . After the disappointing 13th place finish and with no prospect of Formula 1 involvement, Coulon drove again in Formula 3 and Formula Renault races in the following years.

He was also registered in some sports car races . The best place was second overall with Jean-Louis Lafosse in a Lola T290 at the 1000 km race in Paris in 1972 . After the end of his driving career at the end of the 1979 season, he returned to his traditional job as a lecturer.
