Brian Patrick McGuire

Brian Patrick McGuire (born November 2, 1946 in Honolulu , Hawaii ) is an American- Danish emeritus professor of history, lecturer and author.

Life

He is the son of the San Francisco 49ers ' sports writer and advertising director , Dan Francis McGuire (1917–1983) and high school teacher Phyllis Evelyn Goemmer (1916–2009), the fourth of nine children. He married Ann Kirstin Pedersen (* 1947) on January 3, 1970 and in 1980 adopted Christian Sung Dan Pedersen from Korea.

McGuire received a BA in History and Latin from the University of California at Berkeley in 1968 , with the highest grade point average in his senior year. He was a Fulbright Scholar at Balliol College of Oxford University , where he by Richard Southern was supervised and 1971 he received a D.Phil. in the history. In 1970 he was a tutor in The great books of Western civilization at St. John's College (Annapolis / Santa Fe) .

McGuire emigrated to Denmark in 1971 and worked for an electronics company. He moved to the Department of History at the University of Copenhagen, where he was a postdoctoral fellow from 1972–74 .

Eventually, McGuire became a Danish citizen in 1976. From 1975 to 1996 he was a lecturer at the Institute for Greek and Latin at the University of Copenhagen . In 1996 McGuire moved to Roskilde University as Professor of Medieval History . He has been professor emeritus in history since 2012.

McGuire was elected a Corresponding Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America in 2011 . Together with his wife Ann Pedersen he founded the Jyderup flygtningevenner in 1985 and was the spokesman for the National Association of Danish Refugee Friends from 1986 to 1995. In 1987 he received the PH award (in memory of the architect and cultural critic Poul Henningsen ) and in 1993 the annual award of the Association for Legal Policy ("Retsolitisk Forening")

His academic focus is on the history of the Cistercians in Denmark, everyday life, friendship and spirituality of the Cistercians, Danish and European identities in the Middle Ages and the history of prayer.
