Cheng Congfu , internationally known as Congfu "Frankie" Cheng , ( Chinese 程 叢 夫 / 程 丛 夫 , Pinyin Chéng Cóngfū ; born August 15, 1984 in Beijing ) is a Chinese racing driver .
Career
Cheng began his motorsport career in karting in 1996 , where he was active until 2001. Among other things, he won the Chinese championship title in 2000 and 2001. In 2001, he was also Asian kart runner-up. In 2002 he moved into the single-seater racing and competed in the Asian Formula Renault . He immediately won the championship title in the Chinese class and came second in the Asian class. In 2003 he started in the British Formula Renault, in which he finished 30th overall. In 2004 the Chinese moved to Manor Motorsport and contested his second season in the British Formula Renault, in which he was able to improve to 22nd place in the overall standings.
After Cheng first won the runner-up in the British Formula Renault winter championship in 2005, he again competed in the British Formula Renault. He achieved his first podium finish and was eleventh overall. In 2006 the Chinese competed in his fourth season in the British Formula Renault. Although he could not win a race, at the end of the season he finished third overall thanks to eight podium finishes. In winter 2006/2007 , Cheng and Ho-Pin Tung competed for the Chinese team in the A1GP series. His best finish was fourth. He then took part in the national class of the British Formula 3 Championship and was runner-up in this classification.
In the 2007/2008 A1GP season , Cheng was the only driver for the Chinese team. With a third place as the best result, the team finished 13th overall at the end of the season. He then entered the Formula 3 Euro Series for the third race of the 2008 season . Cheng, whose best placement was ninth, remained without points in this series and finished 29th in the overall standings. He also competed in the 2008 Le Mans 24-hour race and finished third in the LMP2 classification. In the 2008/2009 A1GP season , Cheng only took part in four races. In addition, he only started in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in 2009 , where he finished third in the SP3T classification.
In the 2010 season , Cheng competed in the DTM for the Mercedes-Benz Persson Motorsport team . As the team’s third driver, alongside Jamie Green and Susie Stoddart, he drove in a 2008 DTM version of the C-Class . He took over the vehicle from Mathias Lauda , who had driven for Mücke Motorsport the previous season . Unlike his teammates, Cheng did not score any points. His best placement was three twelfth places.
Cheng did not receive a cockpit for the 2011 DTM season . His previous vehicle was occupied by Renger van der Zande .
November 13, 2011 Cheng took along with Mika Hakkinen and Lance David Arnold on a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG at the 6-hour race of Zhuhai in part, to the final round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup . The vehicle retired in the third hour.
