Fernand Gabriel (born April 30, 1878 in Paris , † September 9, 1943 in La Garenne-Colombes ) was a French racing driver .

Career

Gabriel began his career in 1899 in the Tour de France for automobiles in 1899 , where he was able to achieve a class victory. He achieved his greatest successes with racing cars from the Mors brand . A victory in the Ardennes race in 1902 was only prevented by a defect in the last lap, he had to be content with second place. His greatest triumph was the victory in the aborted Paris – Madrid 1903 race . The race was stopped because of several fatal accidents (including Marcel Renault ) in Marseille , Gabriel's driving performance in this race (he was more than 15 minutes faster than the competition over the 552 km) is still considered a highlight today.

After this success, Gabriel's star began to decline, probably also because he no longer had any competitive material available. From 1904 to 1907 he started on De Dietrich and Lorraine-Dietrich , at the GP of France in 1908 he was only twelfth on Clément-Bayard . After the First World War he still competed in touring car and hill climbs .

Gabriel later worked in the Renault car factory. He died in 1943 when the factory was bombed by the Royal Air Force .
