Levegh
Levegh , bourgeois Alfred Velghe , (born June 16, 1870 in Kortrijk , Belgium , † February 28, 1904 in Pau , Aquitaine ) was a French racing driver . The name Levegh is an anagram of the real name.
Career
Levegh began his career as a cyclist , but later got into motor racing. He drove on Mors brand cars and was the one driver who managed to break through the years of dominance of Panhard & Levassor cars.
He had his first major success in 1899 at the Paris – Oostende race in 1899 , when he crossed the finish line at the same time as Léonce Girardot . A year later Levegh won at Paris – Toulouse – Paris . Due to his poor health, he then withdrew from racing and died in 1904 of tuberculosis .
His nephew, Pierre Bouillin, named himself after his uncle Pierre Levegh . He became a long-distance driver, best known for his involvement in the 1955 Le Mans disaster .
