Caberto Conelli
Carlo Alberto "Caberto" Conelli, Conte De Prosperi (born August 26, 1889 in Belgirate , † August 25, 1974 ibid) was an Italian nobleman and racing car driver .
Career
Conelli was a son of the Piedmontese diplomat Carlo Conelli and Anna Bracorens di Savoiroux, who came from a Savoyard noble family. The two had six children: four girls, Caberto and his exactly three years older brother Francesco, called Franz. Caberto Conelli spent a carefree childhood in Turin and the idyllic family villa in Lesa near Belgirate on Lake Maggiore . He was an avid sailor and motorboat driver . He came into contact with automobiles through Alfonso Ferrero di Ventimiglia , the husband of his sister Carla. He was one of the founders of Fiat .
After taking part in the First World War in Macedonia as a driver, Caberto Conelli made his pilot's license in 1917. He then became a member of the 91ª Squadriglia ( Squadriglia Baracca ) of Francesco Baracca , shot down four aircraft and won several awards. In 1919 Fiat gave him the opportunity to take part in the Parma – Poggio di Berceto hill climb. Conelli qualified first in its class. On September 29, 1920, he celebrated the first victory of his career on a FAST in the hill climb from Aosta to Gran San Bernardo .
In 1921 Conelli won a qualifying run for the first Italian Grand Prix in a Diatto Bugatti (also Diatto Type 30) on the Circuito di Montichiari near Brescia . A few days later, he also won the Grand Prix Voiturette Gentlemen framework of the Italian Grand Prix 1921 .
At the end of 1922, Franz Conelli retired from active racing and, among other things, took care of his brother Caberto's racing activities. An Amilcar was bought for the 1923 season , with which it made a successful start in the Voiturette category.
In 1925, Conelli followed in Giulio Masetti's footsteps and became a works driver with the STD Group, the merger of Sunbeam , Talbot and Darracq , and only competed abroad this season . He made his debut on March 8, 1925 at the Grand Prix de Provence on the Circuit de Miramas with the Talbot-70 -Voiturette and finished second behind his British team-mate Henry Segrave . On May 17, he had an accident with his Talbot at the Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry in France on the start-finish straight , hit a wall three times, was thrown out of his car, but still managed to get his car over the finish line bring and come second.
Conelli later started as a works driver for Bugatti and, among other things, finished second behind Frenchman Robert Benoist ( Delage ) at the 1927 Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuito Lasarte near San Sebastián in a Bugatti T39A and third at the 1929 French Grand Prix at Le Mans behind W. Williams (Bugatti) and André Boillot ( Peugeot ).
The end of the 1920s became Conelli to a specialist for on Sicily discharged Targa Florio . In 1927 he finished second behind Emilio Materassi ( Bugatti T35C ), and third in 1928 and 1930 .
1931 took Conelli for Bugatti at the first time of international automobile sports federation AIACR advertised Grand Prix European part. He started together with W. Williams on a T51 and together with the British won the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps , which brought them both eighth place overall. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans he competed with Maurice Rost in a T50S . On Saturday evening he had a serious accident after a puncture. The wreck of the Bugatti hurled into a group of spectators, where one spectator was killed. After the tragedy became known, Ettore Bugatti withdrew the other two cars from the race.
Caberto Conelli died on August 25, 1974 at the age of 84.
