Maurice Rost (born October 13, 1886 in Clichy , † October 31, 1958 in Le Vésinet ) was a French racing car driver and aviator .

Aviator

Before the First World War , in the early stages of aviation , Maurice Rost participated in aerial races . He worked as a pilot at the Société de Production des Aéroplanes Deperdussin, based in Étampes . In 1913 he won the Cross Country Aérien flown out in Reims .

Racing career

After the end of the First World War, Maurice Rost's racing career began. He celebrated his first victory at the Circuit des Routes Pavées 1923 , a road race for sports cars in Pont-à-Marcq in northern France . Rost won this race two more times in his career in 1925 and 1927. Rost contested his races almost exclusively with racing cars from Georges Irat . He had a long-term contract with the company, which was founded in Paris in 1914 .

His greatest success in sports cars was winning the 1927 San Sebastián 12-hour race , also known as the Guipúzcoa Grand Prix . This was a sports car race; the event for monoposto cars was held as the Gran Premio de San Sebastián . His teammate was Marcel Lehoux . His best monoposto results were victories at the Grand Prix de Provence in 1926 and the Grand Prix of Morocco in 1927 .

He competed twice in the Le Mans 24-hour race . In 1926 the Georges Irat 4A / 3, which he drove with Emil Burie , retired early in the race after a defect. In the 1931 race he competed with Caberto Conelli in a Bugatti T50S . On Saturday evening Cobelli had a serious accident after a puncture. The wreck of the Bugatti hurled into a group of spectators, where one spectator was killed. After the tragedy became known, Ettore Bugatti withdrew the other two cars from the race. It was Rost's last known race start.
