Hans Geissberger

Hans Geissberger (born June 24, 1921 in Basel ; † March 26, 1999 there ) was a Swiss sculptor and painter .
Life
Hans Geissberger first worked as a trainee in a machine factory, briefly visited the technical center in Winterthur and then decided to become a sculptor. He learned the trade for a year and a half with Ernst Suter in Basel. This was followed by two years in Zurich with the French sculptor Germaine Richier , a student of Antoine Bourdelle . Here he learned relaxed and generous work. At the same time he attended Henry Wabel's drawing academy .
In 1948 Hans Geissberger got a job as an art teacher in Basel. At the same time, he regularly worked in his own studio, carried out numerous commissions and took part in Kunstkredit Basel-Stadt competitions. Among other things, he created a relief above the entrance to the Basler Kantonalbank , a large-scale sculpture in the park near St.-Alban-Tor and five reliefs on the town hall in Riehen . A large number of his sculptures and reliefs adorn public and sacred buildings in the city of Basel.
From 1964 he no longer took part in competitions, organized his own exhibitions and devoted himself to private commissions. He sculpted portraits of children, created several portraits, such as that of Edgar Bonjour on behalf of the University of Basel . For health reasons, he switched to painting around 1967.
