Ernst Suter (born June 16, 1904 in Basel , † April 30, 1987 in Aarau ) was a Swiss sculptor , ceramist and sculptor .

life and work

Ernst Suter grew up in a bourgeois family in the city of Basel. Before he even received his Matura certificate, he had to leave the canton school because of his participation in a student revolt. He then did an apprenticeship as a sculptor with Jakob Probst , with whom he had a lifelong friendship. In 1923 he went to Paris for further studies . There his first teacher was Henri Bouchard (1875-1960). Then he went to Paul Landowsky . He took courses at the Académie Julian and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière . He worked as a journeyman with Aristide Maillol in Marly-le-Roi for two years until 1926 , after which he ran his own studio. With his friend Wilhelm Gimmi (1886–1965) he was often a guest at John Friedrich Vuilleumier's and often met with his artist colleague Charles Häusermann (1886–1938). In 1934 Suter returned to Basel.

In 1939 Suter married his second wife, the doctor Anna Ernst. From 1946 he lived with his family in Aarau . Suter and Eduard Spörri were the most important sculptors of the representational old school in the 20th century . He designed a lot in public spaces in Aargau, and especially in Aarau, and worked with the Basel architect Rudolf Christ (1895–1975). Hans Geissberger was a student of Suter.

Suter's grave is in the Aarau cemetery. The grave sculpture Verena with comb and jug is identical to the one that can be seen on the Zurzach – Rheinheim bridge over the Rhine .
