Albert Schnyder (born September 9, 1898 in Delsberg ; † May 28, 1989 there , authorized to reside in Roggwil ) was a Swiss painter and graphic artist .

Life

Albert Schnyder, a native of Delsberg, son of the locomotive driver Albert Schnyder senior and Suzanne née Blaser, first completed an apprenticeship in lithography in Bern before moving to the trade school in Basel in 1918 and studying with Arnold Fiechter and Albrecht Mayer . After graduating in 1921, Schnyder learned during study visits to Munich , Berlin and most of the larger German cities. There he got to know the works of the Cubists and Expressionists before he finally settled in Delsberg in 1924 and dealt with the Jura landscape in a painterly way. In 1929 Schnyder traveled to southern France and Paris for the first time. Further trips to Belgium, Italy and England follow.

From 1930 Schnyder was able to sell his works to important collections. A friendship with Paul Klee developed through the contacts with the collectors . In 1934 Schnyder founded the group BBZ 8, which had only existed for two years, with seven artists from Basel, Bern and Zurich . As a result, friendly contacts with important collectors such as Walter and Gertrud Hadorn, Othmar Huber , the Kunsthalle and museum directors Lucas Lichtenhan , Georg Schmidt and Max Huggler , about the art historian Paul Hofer and the French painter Marcel Gromaire , in addition to his successful participation in exhibitions since the 1940s, Albert Schnyder's position in the Swiss art scene was essential.

In 1948 he surprisingly represented Switzerland at the XXI with René Auberjonois . Biennale in Venice . Schnyder, made an honorary citizen of Delsberg in 1978 - he married Hélène, the daughter of the police officer Joseph Jemelin, in 1936 - died on May 28, 1989 in Delsberg.

Act

Schnyder's early work, which he largely destroyed, was influenced by naive art and Cubism . In the following creative period Schnyder switched to painting Jurassic landscapes, where he developed an unmistakable figurative visual language. The landscapes are kept rather sparse and reflect melancholy moods. Other preferred motifs are people or horses from his environment. His works can be found in various museums and private collections in Switzerland.
