Albrecht Mayer (born March 26, 1875 in Basel , † June 30, 1952 ) was a Swiss painter , lithographer and teacher at the trade school in Basel.

life and work

Albrecht Mayer grew up as the son of a master shoemaker at Spalenberg 23 in Basel. His mother was Susanna Verena née Ernst (* 1836). He completed his apprenticeship in the "Brother lithographic institute" on the Schlüsselberg, and attended Fritz Schider's art class at the trade school.

By chance Ernst Bumm became aware of Mayer's anatomical hand studies, which meant that he was able to illustrate his scientific works. Mayer also worked for Hanson Kelly Corning (1860–1951) who was prosector and lecturer at the Anatomical Institute of the University of Basel from 1893 . Mayer's anatomical drawings made a significant contribution to livening up the works of the two scholars and making them understandable. His interest in anatomy was later of great use in teaching plastic anatomy at the vocational school.

After his apprenticeship he traveled to Stuttgart and Milan, and later to Halle and Berlin. There he studied at the Academy of Arts and continued his painting studies.

In 1907 he married Anny Seiler and was appointed to the trade school for the art class, for figure and nude drawing as well as for courses in plastic anatomy, as the successor of Fritz Schnider. There he taught numerous budding artists together with Arnold Fiechter until 1941. His students included Albert Schnyder , Ernst Giese, Irène Zurkinden , Max Kämpf , Heinrich Danioth , Toni Nigg , Gustav Stettler, Ruedi Schmid, Karl Faig, Christoph Iselin and his wife Elly Iselin-Boesch. Even Roland Brückner took from 1927 to 1936 taught by Mayer and revered this life.

Schnyder was friends with Ferdinand Hodler , Cuno Amiet , Burkhard Mangold , Otto Plattner , Ernst Buchner and Louis Dischler , among others . As President of the GSMBA Basel, he was one of the initiators who contributed to the establishment of the Basel-Stadt Art Credit . From 1908 to 1918 Mayer was president of the Basler Künstlergesellschaft and was a member of the Basler Kunstverein as well as a member of the Art Credit Commission. Mayer was also a supervisor and since 1941 master of the guild of shoemakers.
