Max Huggler (born October 12, 1903 in Bern , † November 25, 1994 in Berlin ) was a Swiss art historian , museum director and university professor.

Life

Max Huggler was born as the son of police sergeant Melchior Huggler in Bern. There he completed a degree in Protestant theology and art history . His first professional activities took him to Berlin. In 1928 he did his doctorate with Artur Weese in Bern, in 1931 he took over the management of the Kunsthalle Bern , where he was also in charge of the Hermann and Margrit Rupf Foundation . As early as 1933 he organized a large exhibition for Ernst Ludwig Kirchner here . In 1932 he completed his habilitation in art history on the circle of images in the manuscripts of the Alexander Apocalypse , also in Bern . In 1944 he switched to the management of the Kunstmuseum Bern , which he headed until 1965. In 1947, the deposited Paul Klee Foundation the estate of the painter there. In 1946 Huggler was appointed professor at the University of Bern , where he taught art history as an associate professor until 1973. Huggler was a member of the Federal Art Commission (EKK) from 1945 to 1950 . From 1949 to 1955 he was president of the Swiss Art Association, from 1952 of the Association of Swiss Art Museums and from 1960 to 1966 of the Swiss Committee of the International Museum Council (ICOM).

He lived in Sent , among other places , where he was friends with the artist Not Vital , Rome and Poschiavo .

He bequeathed the most important works from his private collection to the Kunstmuseum Bern. Around 80 works from the rest of the collection, including pictures by Cuno Amiet , Joseph Beuys , Max Böhlen , Eduardo Chillida , Sam Francis , Rolf Iseli , Ernst Ludwig Kirchner , Paul Klee , Joan Miró , Pablo Picasso , Mimmo Rotella , Mario Schifano and Mark Tobey were Auctioned in 2007 in Bern.
