Blankette of a bond of the artist society in Zurich dated May 1, 1858

The Société des Arts was founded in Geneva in 1776, the second in Zurich in 1787, followed by other “artist societies”, which served as discussion forums and workshops and promoted relationships between laypeople and artists. Over time, the associations began to build up collections, organize exhibitions, promote museums and act as dialogue partners for the authorities, thereby enabling the public Swiss art market. The umbrella organization of these associations was the Society of Swiss Artists and Friends of Art , founded in 1806 , later called the Swiss Art Association . From 1840 the association organized the Swiss rotating exhibitions . He was "for decades ... the only art bearer of national importance".

The Swiss Art Association was the editor of the Swiss Artist Lexicon , which was published in four volumes between 1905 and 1917 under the editorship of Carl Brun .
