The marathon of women at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics was on August 12, 2001 at Commonwealth Stadium, the Canadian city of Edmonton held.

World Champion was the Romanian bronze medalist of the previous two World Cups ( 1997 / 1999 ) and Olympic silver medalist from 2000 Lidia Şimon . She had also won bronze over 10,000 meters at the 1998 European Championships . Silver went to Reiko Tosa from Japan . Third place went to Svetlana Sakharova from Russia .

As with the previous World Championships , there was a team classification, the so-called Marathon Cup. The number of participants was correspondingly high. Five runners per nation were allowed, of which the times of the best three were added together for the evaluation. However, this competition was not part of the official medal table. The team from Japan won ahead of Russia and Romania .
