Shitaye Gemechu

Shitaye Gemechu ( Shitaye Gemechu Debele ; born June 17, 1980 ) is an Ethiopian marathon runner .

Life

In 2001 she finished second at the Vienna City Marathon , seventh at the World Athletics Championships in Edmonton and won the Amsterdam Marathon .

The following year she won the 20 van Alphen , was tenth at the London Marathon , came 24th at the World Half Marathon Championships in Brussels and was fourth at the Berlin Marathon .

In 2003 she came second at the Hamburg Marathon and tenth at the World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis . In 2004, a victory in the Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon was followed by an eighth place in the Nagano Marathon and a sixth in the Chicago Marathon .

The following year, she defended her title in Arizona, finished seventh at the Boston Marathon and finished 22nd at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki.

After her third victory in Arizona in 2006, she was fifth in the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and seventh in Berlin. In 2007 she set a course record in the Treviso Marathon and was eighth in the Istanbul Marathon .

In 2008 she placed seventh in the Dubai Marathon, a fourth in the Paris Marathon and a seventh in Istanbul, and in 2009 she was fifth in the Tokyo Marathon .

She was the first to cross the finish line at the Route du Vin 2009, but was disqualified after her doping test tested positive for erythropoietin (EPO). She was then banned from her athletics association for doping for two years. It was the first time that this substance had been found in an Ethiopian athlete.
