The dům umění in Brno

Today's Dům umění ( German  House of Art , originally "Artist's House " ) was built as the Emperor Franz Joseph's jubilee artist house in the Czech city of Brno .

history

In 1882 the Moravian Art Association was founded with the participation of the Moravian Trade Association. Its goals consisted primarily of organizing exhibitions, purchasing works of art and setting up an association's own gallery, supporting visual artists and establishing contacts between artists and collectors interested in buying.

To make room for these tasks, the Kaiser-Franz-Josephs-Jubiläums-Künstlerhaus was built between 1908 and 1911 according to plans by Heinrich Ried , an architect from Vienna . The opening took place on March 25, 1911 with an exhibition by the Association of German-Moravian Visual Artists.

In contrast to the municipal German City Theater , the German artist house in Brno, like the German house, remained under German control after the establishment of Czechoslovakia, and in addition to looking after visual artists, literary evenings, small concerts, dance events and artist festivals could still be organized. In addition, the premises were often made available to Czech organizations.

Until 1938, German, Austrian and Czech artists were presented in solo and group exhibitions. With the establishment of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia , the art association came under the control of the new rulers and was brought into line. For political and racial reasons, numerous members had to leave the association.

In 1944 and 1945 the Künstlerhaus was damaged by the effects of the war. Paintings from the in-house collection and the library's holdings were in part passed into the possession of other institutions and private individuals. The loss of the archive makes it difficult to scientifically process the history of the house and the Moravian Art Association, which was dissolved in September 1945.

layout

The Kaiser-Franz-Josephs-Jubilee-Künstlerhaus in Brno was built according to plans by the architect Heinrich Karl Ried as an early work in Art Nouveau style with neoclassical elements. He also designed the interior furnishings that are no longer preserved. The three-storey building had a centrally arranged, Baroque-style gable and a two-storey, semi-cylindrical porch with a covered central entrance in front. It housed a small gallery, a library, an archive, an event hall for lectures and various cultural events, as well as studios. The construction was supported by donations from the Schoeller , Gomperz and Offermann families .

The Brno artists' house was badly hit by Allied bombs in the last days of the war, and important parts were destroyed. In 1946 and 1947, according to plans by the Brno star architect Bohuslav Fuchs , renovations in the style of Brno functionalism took place . The former secessionist building became the modern “Dům umění” in its present form. Between 2008 and 2009 another renovation took place according to plans by Petr Hrůša .
