Jean-Pierre Hoby

Jean-Pierre Hoby (* 1945 ) is a Swiss sociologist , political scientist , lawyer and cultural manager . From 1983 to the end of 2010, as Director of Culture for the City of Zurich, he played a key role in shaping Zurich's cultural policy.

Life

Jean-Pierre Hoby, the son of a Swiss banker and a French teacher, studied sociology, social psychology and theoretical social economics at the University of Zurich and completed his first degree in 1974 with a dissertation on education system and society . He then studied law at the same university and completed his second degree in 1979 with a licentiate . From 1979 to 1982 he worked as a research assistant at the Federal Office of Justice in Bern and dealt with the total revision of the Federal Constitution (evaluation of the consultations on what was then the “ Furgler draft ”).

In 1983 he was appointed director of culture by the Zurich city council , a position he held until his retirement at the end of 2010. The highlights of his work include the acceptance of various proposals for voting by the Zurich electorate: Zurich Chamber Orchestra 1983, Filmpodium-Kino 1986, Rote Fabrik 1987, Theaterhaus Gessnerallee 1993, cantonalization of the opera in 1994, subsidy increase for the Schauspielhaus 2002, Zürcher Filmstiftung 2004 and Cabaret Voltaire 2008 .

From 2011 he took on a teaching position on the subject of cultural policy and cultural financing at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts - Design & Art in the MAS advanced training program in cultural management practice . He holds various mandates in the cultural sector, including a. President of the Swiss Art Association , President of the Filmbulletin Foundation, member of the Board of Directors of the Locarno Film Festival and member of the executive committee MAS Applied History at the University of Zurich . Since 2016 he has been president of ARTTV , the «Swiss cultural television network».

Jean-Pierre Hoby is the father of 5 grown children (3 daughters and 2 sons) and lives in Zurich's old town.

Awards

For his services to cultural exchange with France, Hoby was awarded the Order of the Arts and Literature by the French Ministry of Culture in 2001.
