The Federal Office of Justice FOJ ( French Office fédéral de la justice OFJ , Italian Ufficio federale di giustizia UFG ) is a federal authority of the Swiss Confederation . It is one of four federal offices of the Federal Department of Justice and Police FDJP based in Bern .

The BJ's for the development and formulation of regulations to applicable laws of the Swiss civil , criminal , debt enforcement - and bankruptcy law , private international law and some of the heads of state and administrative law jurisdiction, which the Federal Council be adopted.

As a legal competence center, the Federal Office performs the advisory function for the Federal Council and the federal administration on questions of Swiss legislation and international treaties. The FOJ also acts as an interface between federal legislation and implementation in the cantons .

The office has the overall supervision of the commercial register , civil status and land registry at the federal level and authorizes foreigners to acquire real estate. As a federal authority, the office is also responsible for the execution of sentences and the keeping of the Swiss criminal record and functions as a central office in cases of international child abduction. It works with the Federal Prosecutor's Office and foreign authorities on international legal assistance and extraditions . International human rights protection is also part of its competence .

The Federal Office of Justice represents Switzerland in several international organizations where legal issues are priority. For example in the Council of Europe (without its Parliamentary Assembly , in which six federal parliamentarians represent Switzerland) or in the European Court of Human Rights (except for the case law , in which the country is represented  by a Swiss judge appointed by the Federal Council - in accordance with the separation of powers ).
