John Friedrich Vuilleumier , actually Johann Frédéric Vuilleumier , (born December 1, 1893 in Basel , † August 23, 1976 in Riehen / Canton Basel-Stadt ) was a Swiss lawyer and writer .

Life

John Frédéric Vuilleumier was the son of an industrialist from the Swiss canton of Jura ; his mother came from Basel. After attending the high school in Basel, he completed a law degree at the universities in Basel, Geneva , Berlin and Zurich . 1918 doctorate he attended the University of Basel to the doctor 's rights. Since he refused to embark on a conventional legal career, he first volunteered at a prison in Basel . In 1919 he went to the United States , where he study half a year volunteered as prisoners in the jails of Portsmouth (New Hampshire) and Auburn (New York) spent. He then crossed the United States as an adventurer to California and back to New York . Then he traveled to the Caribbean island of Trinidad , where he stayed for a few months in the primeval forests. After his return to Europe he lived in Paris from 1931 , interrupted by further trips and a stay in Switzerland during the Second World War .

John Friedrich Vuilleumier was the author of novels , short stories , plays and radio plays . While his early works are characterized by his criticism of the judiciary and his sympathy for the victims of a repressive prison system , Vuilleumier later wrote in an emphatically sensual manner on topics from the Swiss provinces, especially the Jura .
