mp3.de

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

mp3.de was the first German online music service . The name refers to the MP3 file format .

history

mp3.de went online in 1997. At first it was a purely technical forum for the MP3 file format , which was new at the time , but a little later the focus was on music. This created a platform for musicians who wanted to distribute their works over the Internet. In addition to the well-known artists and labels , newcomers without a record deal had the opportunity to offer their music in order to make themselves better known to the public.

After mp3.de offered around 600 pieces of music free of charge in mid-1999, at the beginning of 2000 it had 5 million page views per month. In mid-2003, the offer had already expanded to around 150,000 free songs by up-and-coming artists.

In 2000, mp3.de spoke out with other companies against the Europe-wide appropriation of the meanwhile widespread term mp3 by the company Hypermedia , a German cable TV provider, and filed an objection to the corresponding trademark protection application that Hypermedia submitted to Alicante at the beginning of 1999 European Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market and which, if approved, would have led to a license claim against commercial users of the term.

Since 2004 mp3.de has been operated by the music and film production company Tigavision GmbH . As a result of this takeover, in April 2005, for the first time, the paid sale of music by established artists in MP3 format was started. Up-and-coming artists without a record deal were still given the opportunity to set prices for their own songs and albums. At the beginning of 2007 there were around 250,000 such MP3 tracks from around 65,000 young artists on offer, most of which were still offered free of charge. However, the focus was now on the music of the major labels (around 750,000 titles) and the amateur music was only accessible after several clicks . Compared to 2005, a large part of the commercial titles on the portal were no longer in the MP3 format that gave their name, but in other formats (e.g. WMA ) through DRM measures, since most of the larger music labels only use this Condition their titles provided.

In 2011 mp3.de was sold to Media Ventures GmbH , which outsourced the concept of direct marketing of newcomer music to youmusic24.de . Since then, only mainstream music by established artists has been marketed on mp3.de.

Positions on digital rights management

mp3.de sometimes criticized the sense of DRM measures. With the “I care for music” campaign, mp3.de wanted to achieve the freedom to deal with music content as freely as possible and at the same time encourage customers to protect artist rights. Nevertheless, DRM-protected content was also offered on the platform. The campaign, which has since been renamed “I love music”, now makes no explicit statements about digital rights management.

Cellular

Since 2008, mobile phone tariffs have also been marketed under the brand name mp3.de. So they offered in cooperation with the Düsseldorf company GTcom the first UMTS - flat rate on a monthly basis for prepaid to -Kunden in the German mobile market.
