The Speedtail is a three-seater super sports car from the British manufacturer McLaren Automotive , which was first presented to the public on October 26, 2018. The vehicle has a hybrid drive with an engine in front of the rear axle that is expected to produce 770 kW (1047 hp). The curb weight is 1430 kg. According to McLaren, the vehicle should reach a top speed of up to 403 km / h.

General

The Speedtail was first announced in March 2017 under the project name BP23 (Bespoke Prototype 2, 3 seats) as part of the so-called Ultimate Series, the top of the McLaren model series. (See McLaren Senna ) It is considered the successor to the McLaren F1 . McLaren takes on the design of the cockpit with the driver's seat in the center and two passenger seats on the side and further back. The Speedtail is considered to be the fastest McLaren road vehicle. The Speedtail, which is limited to 106 units, is also based on the model. Even before the exact specifications were announced, all copies, priced at over £ 2.1 million each, were reserved by buyers. Production started in late 2019.

Performance

Described by McLaren as the Hyper GT vehicle, the Speedtail is designed to achieve high speed with a high level of comfort. According to official figures, it takes the car 12.8 seconds to accelerate from zero to 300 km / h. The top speed should be 403 km / h (250 mph), which means the Speedtail outperforms the brand's fastest vehicle, the McLaren F1, by 12 km / h.

technology

body

The 5.13 m long body of the McLaren Speedtail is made of lightweight carbon fiber reinforced plastic (KfK). Characteristic is the streamlined shape with a rounded front and an unusually long rear overhang that tapers flat towards the rear. When developing the vehicle, care was taken to make the body from a few, large components in order to avoid unwanted air turbulence through gaps between separate components. A special feature are the hydraulically adjustable spoiler flaps at the rear, which are not independent body parts like in other sports cars, but can be lifted from the rear part of the body thanks to the flexible KfK carrier. In other places, too, attention was paid to reducing air resistance. For example, conventional rear-view mirrors have been replaced by small cameras on the A-pillar . Covers are mounted on the front wheels, which do not turn with the wheel while driving and almost completely prevent turbulence from the front wheels.

Another feature of the Speedtail is the “intelligent glass” in the windshield and the panorama roof . It can be tinted at the push of a button and serves as a sun visor.

Trivia

In September 2017, the British car magazine Top Gear reported on an early prototype that McLaren used to test the three-seat version of the later Speedtail in a specially converted McLaren 720S . The central driver's seat of the prototype was designed using a scan of the driver's seat from the McLaren F1.
