Hydraulic brake
A hydraulic brake is a brake in which the force is transmitted hydraulically , i.e. via a fluid in a line. This technology is used for motor vehicle brakes , but also more and more frequently for bicycle brakes . Hydraulic brakes work with less friction in the transmission elements than mechanically operated brakes. So they are much easier to dose and generate a higher braking force.
The hydraulic fluid used is often brake fluid that is specially adapted and standardized for braking, and mineral oil is also used for bicycles.
Disc or drum brakes with hydraulic actuation are used in motor vehicles . Bicycles are often equipped with rim brakes. Hydraulically actuated brakes are not suitable as parking brakes , unless they are designed as spring-loaded brakes , since permanent pressure maintenance cannot be ensured if the pressure generation is switched off or fails . To protect against failure due to leaks such as the bursting of a brake hose or the unnoticed leakage of hydraulic fluid, the hydraulic systems are designed with two circuits.
In the 1950s, hydraulic brakes for passenger cars - often only single-circuit at the beginning - caught on. Cable brakes were still common on motorcycles for a long time , and extensive attempts to introduce hydraulic brakes began in the early 1950s.
