The OM 656 is a diesel engine from Mercedes-Benz that was introduced in 2017. The assembly takes place at MDC Power GmbH in Kölleda.

The six-cylinder in - line engine OM 656 is the successor to the OM 642 and part of a modular engine generation that includes four and six-cylinder diesel engines as well as four and six-cylinder petrol engines . With the same cylinder displacement (approx. 487 cm³) and spacing (90 mm), a large number of identical parts is achieved.

The engine was first used in 2017 in the facelift of the S-Class ( 222 series ).

technology

Base engine

The displacement of the six-cylinder in - line engine is 2925 cm³ with a bore of 82 mm and a stroke of 92.4 mm, with a cylinder spacing of 90 mm. The compression ratio is 15.5. The engine's crankcase is made of aluminum, the cylinder head is made of a high-strength aluminum alloy. Steel pistons and a so-called NANOSLIDE® cylinder coating are used. This is an iron-carbon layer that is applied directly to the aluminum surface using arc wire spraying and enables high oil retention volumes in the cylinder liner.

The gas exchange is controlled via four valves per cylinder ( four-valve technology ) and two overhead camshafts driven by a timing chain . The engine has a switchable exhaust camshaft to help heat the exhaust system.

Charging and exhaust

The engine has a two-stage exhaust gas turbocharger from BorgWarner. The compressed fresh air is cooled in a charge air cooler .

The OM 656 has both a cooled low pressure exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and a cooled high pressure exhaust gas recirculation. The exhaust gas from the low-pressure EGR is taken from behind the particle filter, cooled and fed back in before the compressor.

The exhaust gas aftertreatment system of the OM 656 is identical to that of the OM 654 , is carried out close to the engine and was designed for test procedures such as the WLTP cycle and Real Driving Emissions (RDE) . A diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC) is used behind the turbine of the turbocharger , then the AdBlue urea solution required to clean the nitrogen oxides is metered in using a downflow mixer. A short mixing section is followed by an SCR-coated diesel particulate filter (sDPF) and an SCR catalytic converter .

Injection and combustion process

The common rail injection works with a fuel pressure of up to 2500 bar.

As with the OM 654 , the stepped bowl combustion process is used. Compared to the previous Omega trough, this should lead to a better degree of efficiency with lower raw particle emissions at the same time.

Versions

The OM 656 is offered in several performance levels.
