The OM 654 is a diesel engine from Mercedes-Benz that was introduced in 2016. The main components are manufactured in the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim engine plant . The motor is assembled at MDC Power GmbH in Kölleda.

The four-cylinder in - line engine OM 654 is the successor to the OM 651 and part of a new, modular engine generation that will include four and six-cylinder diesel engines as well as four and six-cylinder petrol engines . With the same cylinder displacement (approx. 500 cm³) and spacing, a large number of identical parts is achieved.

The OM 654 is the first all-aluminum diesel four-cylinder engine from Mercedes-Benz.

The engine was first used in the E-Class ( 213 series ), which has been delivered since April 2016. A second variant with a displacement reduced to 1.6 liters has also been available since 2018.

The OM654 has also been used in plug-in hybrid configurations since mid-2018 . It started with the C 300 de and E 300 de, with batteries of 13.5 kWh gross and electrical ranges of 50 km and the possibility of charging with alternating current in a few hours.

Since the end of 2018, with the debut in the A-Class A200d and A220d and B-Class B200d and B220d, the OM654 has also been available in a variant for transverse installation, which is then called OM654q. From there, it will gradually be installed in other compact class vehicles on the Daimler MFA2 platform.

At the end of 2019, the OM654 was added to the GLE 350de, and a GLE Coupé 350 de will be added in 2020. In contrast to the previous PHEV from Mercedes-Benz, an electric range of around 100 km is possible with 31.2 kWh gross / 27 kWh gross, and an optional CCS fast-charging connection enables the battery to be charged in around 20 minutes. The charging inlet on the vehicle also changes from an uncomfortably low position on the rear bumper (C300de, E300de) to the rear side wall to the usual height (GLE 350 de).

technology

1.6 liter inline four-cylinder (OM 654 DE 16)

Base engine

The displacement of the four-cylinder in - line engine is 1597 cm³ with a bore of 78 mm and a stroke of 83.6 mm, with a cylinder spacing of 90 mm. The engine's crankcase is made of aluminum, the cylinder head is made of a high-strength aluminum alloy. There are steel pistons and a so-called CONICSHAPE® - Zylinderhonung (Trompetenhonung) are used. In contrast to the 2.0-liter variant, the engine has no Lanchester balance shafts .

2.0 liter inline four-cylinder (OM 654 DE 20)

Base engine

The displacement of the four-cylinder in - line engine is 1950 cm³ with a bore of 82 mm and a stroke of 92.3 mm, with a cylinder spacing of 90 mm. The compression is 15.5. The engine's crankcase is made of aluminum, the cylinder head is made of a high-strength aluminum alloy. Steel pistons and a so-called NANOSLIDE® cylinder coating are used. This is an iron-carbon layer that is applied directly to the aluminum surface using arc wire spraying and enables high oil retention volumes in the cylinder liner. The engine has two Lanchester balance shafts mounted on the side .

The gas exchange is controlled via four valves per cylinder ( four-valve technology ) and two overhead camshafts driven by a timing chain . As with the OM 651, the drive is located at the rear end of the motor (output side) in order to keep the overall height at the front end as small as possible. With the engine installed lengthways, this enables a flat engine hood that rises towards the rear in favor of aerodynamics and pedestrian protection.

In the 143 kW variant, the motor weighs 168.4 kg in accordance with the DIN standard, 35.4 kg less than its predecessor with 125 kW. Running and with all ancillary components, the weight saving is even around 46 kg.

Charging and exhaust

Engine with a turbocharger only use a water-cooled supercharger of Honeywell (GTD1449) with variable turbine geometry . An electric motor adjusts the guide vanes. The compressed fresh air is cooled in a charge air cooler .

Furthermore, the engine has both a cooled low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and a cooled high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation. The exhaust gas from the low-pressure EGR is taken from behind the particle filter, cooled and fed back in before the compressor.

The entire exhaust aftertreatment takes place close to the engine and has already been designed for upcoming test procedures such as the WLTP cycle and Real Driving Emissions (RDE) . By arranging all the exhaust gas aftertreatment elements directly on the engine, the number of engine variants has been reduced compared to the predecessor. A diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC) is used behind the turbine of the turbocharger , then the AdBlue urea solution required to clean the nitrogen oxides is metered in using a downflow mixer. A short mixing section is followed by an SCR-coated diesel particulate filter (sDPF) and an SCR catalytic converter .

Injection and combustion process

The common rail operates with a fuel pressure up to 2700 bar. A CP4 single-piston pump from Bosch is used as the high-pressure pump . The pump is driven by the timing chain.

For the first time in a passenger car diesel engine, a stepped bowl combustion process is used. Compared to an Omega trough, this should lead to a better degree of efficiency with simultaneously lower raw particle emissions.
