The Mercedes-Benz 177 series is the current series of the compact A-Class model from Mercedes-Benz . The vehicle is based on the MFA2 platform and is the successor to the Mercedes-Benz W 176 .
history
The fourth generation of the A-Class was presented in Amsterdam on February 2, 2018 . The market launch took place on May 5, 2018, and the order was released in February of the same year.
First, the fourth-generation A-Class five-door was hatchback - Limousine (W 177) offered. The long version of the notchback (Z 177) was presented in Beijing in April 2018 , but is only available on the Chinese market. A short version (V 177) has been available for the remaining markets since September 2018 . There are four equipment variants.
At the Paris Motor Show in October 2018, the Mercedes-AMG A 35 with 225 kW (306 PS) was presented as the (interim) top model of the series, which went on sale in December 2018. In March 2019, the A 35 also made its debut as a notchback.
The A 45 and A 45 S were presented in July 2019. With 310 kW (421 hp), the latter is the most powerful model in the series and, according to the company, also the most powerful series-produced four-cylinder model in the world.
A variant with a plug-in hybrid drive was presented in August 2019. The A 250 e is produced as a hatchback and sedan and is from 1.3-liter gasoline engine of the type M 282 to 118 kW (160 HP) in combination with a 75 kW (102 hp) electric motor driven. The system output is specified by Mercedes-Benz with 160 kW (218 hp). The lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 15.6 kWh and enables an electrical range of up to 75 kilometers. The vehicle is equipped with a CCS fast charging facility for an additional charge .
The B-Class is based just like the CLA back on the A-Class. The B-Class was also presented at the Paris Motor Show in October 2018 and went on sale in January 2019. The second generation of the CLA was presented as a sedan in January 2019 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and as a Shooting Brake at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019. In addition, the GLB presented in June 2019 and the GLA presented in December 2019 use the A-Class platform.
design
body
As with the predecessor W 176, the body of the W 177 is low. It has a drag coefficient (c w ) from 0.25 and 2.19 m² frontal area. Among other things, the deeply drawn-down front and the lockable fins in front of the cooler, which are available for an extra charge, contribute to the low air resistance. The headlights are smaller than on the predecessor. They are optionally available with automatically adjustable light emitting diodes . The wheelbase of the vehicle is around 3 cm longer than its predecessor, which should make it easier to get started. In combination with a lower seating position, this should improve the comfort on the back seat criticized in the predecessor. The split taillights enable a rear door that is 20 cm wider. The trunk of the hatchback version holds up to 370 liters; that of the sedan 410 liters.
The sedan V 177 even achieved a drag coefficient of 0.22 and thus belongs among other things. a. with the Mercedes-Benz CLA to the world's most aerodynamically efficient production vehicles.

Interior
The vehicle's C-pillars have been reduced in size, which is intended to improve visibility when reversing. In the cockpit there are two widescreen displays that have a diagonal of 7 or 10.25 inches, depending on the equipment variant selected. They are operated with a touchpad . Even in the basic version, the vehicle has no analogue instruments.
The ambient light, which is already known from Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the higher classes, is also available in the A-Class with a choice of 64 colors.
safety
In Euro NCAP - Crash test the vehicle in 2018 was rated with five stars out of five. The tested vehicle achieved 96% in the adult occupant safety assessment and 91% in the child occupant safety. The vehicle received 92% of the points in the pedestrian protection area and 75% in the safety systems.
Innovations
"Mercedes-Benz User Experience"
The W 177 is the first vehicle from Mercedes-Benz with software that functions as an intelligent personal assistant . It is called by the manufacturer Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX). A voice control, which is activated with the command “Hey Mercedes”, can be used to give various commands, such as changing the radio station or changing the temperature. The software can be updated via over-the-air update .
The previously used rotary push-button controller has been replaced by a touchpad with haptic feedback. In addition, the system can be controlled via touchscreen or via the touch surfaces on the steering wheel familiar from the 213 series ( E-Class ) and the model upgrade of the 222 series ( S-Class ). MBUX is included in the basic equipment.
Partially automated driving
The fourth generation of the A-Class can be equipped with the driver assistance systems from the S and E-Class (e.g. DISTRONIC adaptive cruise control, steering assistant, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition and anti-collision systems) and can then drive partially automatically.
landing gear
The components of the chassis vary depending on the engine and special equipment. Mercedes-Benz uses MacPherson struts and forged wishbones as the front axle . Both the handlebars and the cast wheel carriers are made of aluminum. The rack and pinion steering has an electric servo, the effect of which diminishes with increasing speed. It is supported by the driver assistance system and steers, among other things, when oversteering, when braking is uneven and when there is cross wind.
There are two variants for the rear axle: weaker engines are combined with a torsion beam axle with a U-profile, more powerful models or models with 4MATIC all-wheel drive have a four-link rear axle with a subframe. The wheel carrier and the spring link are made of aluminum. There are coil springs at the front and rear and, as standard, telescopic shock absorbers with electronically controlled damping ("DYNAMIC-SELECT"). As an option, you can choose the damper behavior yourself.
Engines
All engines available for this generation of the A-Class, both diesel and gasoline engines, have particle filters.
