Raniero Cardinal Simonetti

Raniero Felice Simonetti (born December 12, 1675 in Cingoli , † August 20, 1749 in Viterbo ) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Simonetti was raised in Rome by his uncle, who later became Cardinal Prospero Marefoschi (1653-1732). He later studied in Macerata and obtained a doctorate in civil and canon law in November 1693. In 1700 he became an auditor at the Apostolic Nunciature in Paris, from 1707 he exercised the same function in Naples.

After he had worked as governor of Masserano and as consultor of the Roman Inquisition, Pope Clement XI appointed him . on October 7, 1711 to Internuntius in Savoy, which he remained until 1717. In September 1718 Simonetti became a consultant at the Apostolic Signature , in September 1724 he became a member of the local tribunal with voting rights. After he was ordained a priest on December 20, 1727 , Pope Benedict XIII appointed him . on June 14, 1728 titular Archbishop of Nicosia . The episcopal ordination received his fifteen days later, his uncle, Cardinal Marefoschi.

On December 23, 1730, Pope Clement XII appointed Simonetti to the Apostolic Nuncio in Naples. A few years after the arrival of the new King of Naples and Sicily, Charles VII , he had to leave the city due to a conflict between Naples and Rome. After this settlement he was brought back to Naples by Charles VII. On December 11, 1743, Simonettis was appointed Governor of Rome and Vice-Camerlengo of the Church by Benedict XIV. This accepted him in the consistory of April 10, 1747 as Cardinal Priest of Santa Susanna in the College of Cardinals . Only a week after the consistory he resigned his offices and in May 1748 was appointed Bishop of Viterbo e Toscanella by Benedict XIV. Cardinal Simonetti died the following year and was buried in Viterbo Cathedral.
