The Cadillac Series 61 was a 1938/39 and 1941 to 1951 model offered by the US automobile manufacturer General Motors under the Cadillac brand .

Model history

From model year 1939, the Cadillac range was divided into the Series 60S (Sixty Special), Series 61, Series 75 and Series 90 (with V16 engine).

The Series 61 replaced the Series 60 built from 1936 to 1938 as the cheapest Cadillac model. It was powered by the 5.7-liter V8 with upright valves and 135 hp, which was taken over from its predecessor. Two-door coupés and convertibles and a five-seater touring sedan (with a partition on request) as well as a four-door convertible were offered. The wheelbase of the 61 was 320 cm (+5 cm compared to the Series 60 last year).

In the 1940 model year, the Cadillac Series 62 temporarily replaced the 61 in the Cadillac program.

The Series 61 produced 5913 units in the 12 months of its first introduction; all bodies were from Fisher Bodies .

From model year 1941, the Series 61 experienced a comeback, again as the cheapest Cadillac model; it now served as a replacement for the discontinued sister brand LaSalle , which had offered cheaper models of the upper middle class from 1927 to 1940 under Cadillac management.

With the wheelbase and technology unchanged (although the 5.7-liter V8 now had 150 hp), a coupé and a four-door sedan in a hatchback design, each in a basic and deluxe version. In the 1941 model year, which was shortened due to the USA entering the war, the series only comprised a Club Coupé and a sedan in one equipment level. The 61 was built on the GM-B platform , which it shared with various models from Buick , Oldsmobile and Pontiac .

When Cadillac resumed production after the end of the war in May 1946, the 61 was also back in unchanged form. In the 1948 model year, the 61, like all Cadillacs, received a new body with the first tail fin approaches; the model range continued to include the Club Coupé and sedan, powered by the 5.7 liter. This was replaced from model year 1949 by a new 5.4-liter V8 with hanging valves (160 hp). After a final facelift in the 1950 model year (with the wheelbase shortened to 310 cm) the 61 was discontinued in the summer of 1951; The Series 62 now acted as the brand's entry-level model .

From 1941 to 1951, a total of 108,737 additional specimens of the 61 were built, again exclusively with Fisher body.
