The first generation of the Lincoln Navigator was introduced in August 1997 as a '98 model.

The navigator is based on the Ford Expedition . In order to differentiate the two models from each other, the body and interior have been changed. The radiator grille, the door handles, the wheel arches, the headlights and the rear lights are designed differently. The interior has been upgraded by the materials used, for example leather upholstery, wood applications, classy carpets and a better audio system. The dashboard is the same as in the Expedition.

The standard equipment includes driver and front passenger airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS), automatic air conditioning, multifunction leather steering wheel, electrically adjustable front seats, automatic low beam, fog lights, level control and a few other electrical helpers.

The engine is the same as in the Ford Expedition, a Ford Triton V8 with 5.4 l displacement and one overhead camshaft per cylinder bank. It develops 170 kW (230 hp) at 4250 min −1 and has a maximum torque of 441 Nm at 3000 min −1 .

The Lincoln Navigator was only available as standard as a 2WD with rear-wheel drive. Optionally offered Lincoln , however, the car also with that of Ford originating wheel drive Control Trac on.

The Navigator was upgraded as early as the 1999 model year. Electrically adjustable pedals and 17-inch aluminum wheels were now standard.

The basic Ford Triton engine was also revised and from then on developed 190 kW (260 hp) at 4500 min −1 and had a torque of 468 Nm at 2300 min −1 . However, in the same year the Ford Triton was replaced by a new Lincoln InTech with the same displacement but two overhead camshafts per cylinder row. He made 220 kW (300 hp) at 5000 min -1 and had a maximum torque of 481 Nm at 2750 min -1 .

From the model year 2000, the equipment list became more extensive. For a surcharge, the car could now be ordered with a navigation system , heated and ventilated front seats, parking aid and side airbags .

The second generation of the Lincoln Navigator appeared in 2003.

Although this was still based on the Ford Expedition , it was given a more independent appearance than the previous generation. The vehicle got a bigger grille, bigger, more noticeable headlights and some other retouches. The interior has also been revised and upgraded: The navigator has now been given a completely “independent” dashboard, which was modeled on the “dual cockpit” of the 1961 Lincoln Continental . As a result, it was equipped with walnut wood applications, newly lit switches and an analog clock in a slightly shiny satin nickel look.

The 2003 model also received better safety features. The vehicle was now equipped with head airbags and, from 2004, optionally with an electric tire air pressure system in combination with Ford's “AdvanceTrac”, a vehicle dynamics and traction control system .

The engine remained unchanged and so the car was only available with the "Lincoln InTech" known from its predecessor.

The comfort equipment has been improved and additional extras have been added, such as an electrically foldable rear seat bench, an electric tailgate and xenon headlights (only in the top model).

Lincoln renewed the chassis with independent suspension and the rack and pinion steering for this model, and the car now ran on 18-inch aluminum wheels as standard. This change made driving behavior safer and more comfortable.

The level control of the predecessor was retained, the only difference being that the vehicle is now lowered by 2.5 cm when it is stationary. This should make it easier to get in and out.

Lincoln Navigator (2005-2006)

In 2005 the Navigator received a facelift . Other fog lights were installed and the AdvanceTrac system with driving dynamics and traction control was now included as standard. In addition, the xenon headlights were now available in all equipment lines.

The Lincoln InTech was also replaced by the Ford Triton . This engine belongs again to Triton engine family from Ford (as already known from the previous model), but it is a new development in 2004, which for the first time in the F-Series from Ford was used. (In the Navigator, however, the engine is not marketed with the addition Triton !). It has 3-valve technology and variable valve control again. He provides 224 kW (300 hp) at 5000 min -1 and was 495 Nm of torque at 3750 min -1 .

In addition, the Ford 4-speed automatic transmission was swapped for a 6-speed automatic transmission from ZF Friedrichshafen .

The third generation of the Navigator was introduced in 2007.

It is based on the Ford T1 chassis, on which the Ford F-150 is also based. Completely redesigned, this model clearly stands out from its two predecessors. The most noticeable changes were in the front section, with the huge chrome-colored radiator grille, the newly designed headlights and a “stronger” bonnet. But the redesigned rear section also clearly differs from that of the predecessor. The many chrome-plated parts are also new, such as the exterior mirror housings or the trim on the doors.

3rd generation rear view (L version)

In the interior, Lincoln continued the new design. So the third generation got a new dashboard again. Otherwise, the equipment with walnut wood and satin-nickel-colored control elements already known from its predecessor has been added in a new design.

The long version of the Navigator was also available for the first time from this model year. This 370 mm longer version is called the Lincoln Navigator L and follows the pattern of long versions such as the Cadillac Escalade ESV , Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL .

Since the new T1 chassis is stiffer than the old U-chassis of the two predecessors, the driving behavior has been improved. Lincoln also changed the chassis of the new model and now relies on a newly designed 5-link rear axle. The vehicle still rests on 18-inch aluminum wheels, although 20-inch wheels are now also available.

The engine from the second generation Navigator has been retained. However, the 6-speed automatic from ZF Friedrichshafen was replaced by a 6-speed automatic from Ford .

In 2008, some of the previously optional equipment items became standard equipment. These include heated and ventilated front seats, an electrically foldable rear bench seat, an electric tailgate, and a THX -certified audio system. A reversing camera is now optionally available.

In 2009, the output of the Ford Triton engine was increased by 7.5 kW (10 PS) to 231 kW (310 PS) and this is now FlexFuel capable. The reversing camera is now standard from this year, as are heated rear seats, a parking aid for the front of the vehicle and a rain sensor .
