The Chevrolet Blazer is a sport utility vehicle from the Chevrolet brand belonging to General Motors .

history

The name of the vehicle goes back to the Chevrolet Blazer , which was built from 1969 . The new blazer was presented as a five-seater for the North American market in June 2018. It is positioned between the Chevrolet Equinox and the Chevrolet Traverse . It shares the technology with the Cadillac XT5 and the GMC Acadia . Production has been taking place in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, since December 2018 .

In China, the blazer is only available in a seven-seater, around 14 centimeter longer version. This is manufactured on site by SAIC General Motors in Shanghai and shares the technology with the Buick Enclave C1UB and the Cadillac XT6 . This variant was presented in November 2019 and has been on sale since March 2020. This variant could also be offered in North America.

Technically, both variants are based on the C1XX platform.

Controversy with the UAW and Donald Trump

The decision to build the blazer in Mexico was criticized by the United Auto Workers , among others . When asked why the blazer wouldn't be made at GM's Lordstown plant , where production of the Chevrolet Cruze ended in 2019, General Motors CEO Mary Barra replied that retrofitting the plant would be too expensive. After it was announced in November 2018 that General Motors would close two vehicle assembly plants and two transmission plants in the United States in 2019, the United Auto Workers urged members to boycott the blazer as General Motors doubles the workforce in Mexico and continues to use temporary workers at U.S. plants , dismissed UAW workers are deprived of the opportunity to find new work.

US President Donald Trump , who is critical of the production of US automobile manufacturers abroad, threatened to end the North American free trade agreement in 2018 in order to be able to levy import duties on vehicles imported from Mexico, among other things. The successor to the United States Mexico Canada Agreement , which was ratified in December 2019, forces Mexican car factories to pay minimum wages. In return, the United States will continue to allow duty-free vehicles made in Mexico.

On March 26, 2019, a Chevrolet Blazer and a Chevrolet Silverado were placed on the Chevrolet Fountain in the Detroit Tigers' Comerica Park as official vehicles for the 2019 MLB baseball season . The blazer was replaced with a Chevrolet Traverse a few days later after auto workers reported in local media that it was made in Mexico.
