The spiral ( Japanese スパイラル Supairaru ) is an artificial ice rink for luge , bobsleigh and skeleton in Nagano City Bobsleigh and Luge Park ( Engl. For the Nagano-shi Bobsleigh / Luge Park , Jap. 長野市ボブスレー·リュージュパーク ) in the city of Nagano , the capital of the Japanese prefecture Nagano . It is located in the district of Nakasone in the formerly independent Asakawa in the north of today's urban area of Nagano.
The railway owes its name to its many curves and the dynamic movement of the sledges.
history
With the award of the 1998 Winter Olympics to Nagano in 1990, a bobsleigh and toboggan run had to be built. Construction work on this began in November 1993 and was completed in March 1996. The total cost was 10.1 billion yen . Ralf Mende , who worked at the Altenberg racing sledge and bobsleigh track , was called in to help train the staff in making the ice. Mende and his colleagues worked 18 hours a day during the Olympic Games so that the ice was always 2 to 3 centimeters thick. In addition, parasols were used so that a temperature of -10 to -15 degrees could be maintained. In order to ensure good conditions, the games competed in the afternoon. There are a total of 56 sensors on the entire track to keep the ice temperature and thickness constant.
After the turn of the millennium, the 2003 Skeleton World Championship and the 2004 Luge World Championship took place on the track .
