Nagano ( Japanese 長野 市 , - shi ) is the capital of the Nagano prefecture of the same name in the center of Honshū , the main island of Japan .

There is a silk industry, mechanical engineering, wood processing and a university .
Cityscape
Nagano is known for its Buddhist Zenko Temple , which contains one of the oldest Buddha images in Japan. The bronze statue probably dates back to the 6th century. The main hall of the temple is one of the largest wooden structures in Japan.
The Japanese macaque lives in the surrounding area .
history
The place developed as a temple suburb around the Zenkō-ji since the 8th century. He was also a station on the overland route Hokkoku-kaidō.

Sports
On the occasion of the 1998 Winter Olympics , the two ice hockey stadiums Nagano-shi Wakasato Tamokuteki Sports Arena (“Big Hat”) and Nagano Undōkōen Sōgō Undōjō Sōgō Shimin Pool (“Aqua Wing”) were built.
In 1999, the Nagano Marathon was launched to commemorate the Games .
