Ueda ( Japanese 上 田 市 , - shi ) is a city in the east of Nagano Prefecture in the center of the Japanese main island of Honshū . Since March 6, 2006, the area of today's city of Ueda has included the old city of Ueda and the formerly independent municipalities of Maruko, Sanada and Takeshi. In the city is the Tokida campus of Shinshu University .
Ueda is located in the northeast of Nagano Prefecture between Matsumoto and the prefecture capital Nagano . Ueda is approx. 40 km away from Nagano. The distance to Tokyo is approximately 190 km. Since the 1998 Winter Olympics , the city has had a connection to the Shinkansen network through the Tokyo-Nagano route.

The city is located in the Japanese Alps and at an average altitude of 456 meters above sea level. To the north and south of the inhabited urban area there are mountain ranges up to 2000 meters high, some of which are designated as national parks.
The Shinano (Chikuma) flows through the area in an east-west direction. Due to numerous other rivers, the urban area is very water-rich. The area is rich in mountain forests.
history
Ueda is an old castle town where a branch of the Fujii Matsudaira with an income of 50,000 koku last resided until 1868. The remains of the castle have been preserved.
