Higashichikuma-gun was created on January 14, 1879 by splitting the old Chikuma-gun into Higashichikuma-gun and Nishichikuma-gun (renamed Kiso-gun in 1968 ). The administrative seat was initially Matsumoto. With the establishment of the modern communal system, Higashichikuma-gun had a city (Matsumoto) and 37 villages since April 1, 1889. On May 1, 1907, Matsumoto became a city and thus spun off from Higashichikuma-gun. On April 1, 1927, Shiojiri Village became a city. In 1950, Higashichikuma-gun belonged to a city and 35 villages. In the course of the major regional reform in the 1950s, the number of municipalities decreased considerably. On April 1, 1959, Shiojiri became a city and thus spun off from Higashichikuma-gun. In 1960 Higashichikuma-gun only belonged to one town and 11 villages. The current number of parishes has higashichikuma-gun as of March 31, 2010.
