Chikuhoku ( Japanese 筑 北 村 , -mura ) is a village in Higashichikuma-gun in Nagano Prefecture on the Japanese main island of Honshu .
geography
Chikuhoku has an area of 99.5 km² and 5,195 inhabitants (as of February 1, 2010). It consists of three districts (see history), which are separated from each other by mountain ranges. There is no direct mountain road between the districts of Sakai and Sakakita, which makes Sakai a traffic exclave. The rivers Omi and Tōjō flow through Chikuhoku. Neighboring communities are the big cities ( shi ) Azumino , Chikuma , Matsumoto , Nagano and Ueda as well as the villages Ikusaka and Omi (Higashichikuma-gun), and Aoki ( Chiisagata-gun ).
history
Chikuhoku was created on October 11, 2005 by merging the previously independent villages of Sakai, Honjō and Sakakita. Originally the village of Omi was also supposed to become a district of Chikuhoku. However, on September 12, 2004, Omi declared that she would not participate in the regional reform .
traffic
Chikuhoku is on the Shinonoi Line of JR East connected to the Japanese rail network. The train stations Nishijō, Sakakita and Kamuriki are located in Chikuhoku.
The Nagano Highway runs through Chikuhoku . Although there is no junction in Chikuhoku, there are two bus stops for the express bus routes between Nagano and Matsumoto. Furthermore, the national roads 143 and 403 lead through Chikuhoku.
Educational institutions
In each of the three districts there is a primary school that is supported by the village. There is also a middle school. Chikuhoku participates in the sponsorship of the Chikuhoku Middle School, which is in the neighboring village of Omi. There is a library for adult education.
