Iijima ( Japanese : 飯 島 町 , -machi ) is a city in the south of Kamiina-gun in Nagano Prefecture on the Japanese main island of Honshū .
geography
Iijima is located in the Ina Basin between the Kiso Mountains and the Akaishi Mountains . The area is 86.94 km². On February 1, 2010, 10,154 people were living in Iijima. Adjacent municipalities are the major cities ( shi ) Iida and Komagane , the city of Matsukawa ( Shimoina-gun ) and the villages of mura Nakagawa (Kamiina-gun) and Ōkuwa ( Kiso-gun ).
history
At the beginning of the Meiji period , Iijima was the administrative seat of the short-lived Ina Prefecture. As an administrative unit, Iijima was founded as a village on April 1, 1889. On January 1, 1954, Iijima became a city. The last territorial reform took place on September 30, 1956 with the incorporation of the village of Nanakubo.

By Iijima extending Iida line of JR Central . There are a total of five train stations in Iijima (Iijima, Ina-Hongō, Nanakubo, Tagiri and Takatōbara)
The National Road 153 and the Chūō Highway run through Iijima . The Iijima bus stop for express buses is located at the latter.
Educational institutions
There are two elementary schools and one middle school in Iijima. All schools are sponsored by the city.
