history

Kitaazumi-gun was created on January 14, 1879 by dividing the old Azumi-gun into Kitaazumi-gun and Minamiazumi-gun (South Azumi-gun). The latter was dissolved in 2005 with the establishment of the independent city of Azumino . The seat of the then district administration was Ōmachi. On April 1, 1889, 17 villages belonged to Kitaazumi-gun, but on April 10, 1889 Ōmachi was named a city. On April 1, 1915, Ikeda was named a city. Before the major territorial reform of the 1950s, Kitaazumi-gun belonged to two cities and 15 villages. With the first major regional reform on July 1, 1954, Ōmachi became a district. Further communal amalgamations followed in 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958 and 1959. In 1960 Kitaazumi-gun only had one town and five villages. The last territorial reform took place on January 1, 2006, when the villages of Miasa and Yasaka were merged with Ōmachi.
