history

Kamitakai-gun was created on January 14, 1879 by a division of Takai-gun into Kamitakai-gun and Shimotakai-gun ("Unter-Takai-gun"). The seat of the then existing district administration was the city of Suzaka . As of April 1, 1889, Kamitakai-gun had one city and 14 villages. On July 1, 1922, the districts of Koyama and Sakata of the village of Toyooka of the city of Suzaka were struck. The only amalgamation of entire communities before the Second World War took place on December 1, 1936. Before the major territorial reform of the 1950s, Kamitakai-gun had one town and 13 villages. On February 1, 1954, the village of Obuse became a town. By 1960, the number of parishes in Kamitakai-gun was significantly reduced. By amalgamation, this number was reduced to two cities and two villages. Two further amalgamations on October 16, 1966 and April 30, 1971 reduced the number of parishes in Kamitakai-gun to the current number. Kamitakai-gun has not been affected by the major territorial reform of the last few years ( heisei daigappei ).
