Two different vehicles were called Lumina in the USA, which initially led to some confusion among buyers. In addition to a sedan called the Lumina Sedan , the Lumina APV minivan was also offered.

The last model was manufactured in Australia by GM subsidiary Holden and only offered in a few markets.

In autumn 1994 the Lumina was completely renewed . Only the sedan remained, as the Lumina Coupé was renamed Monte Carlo . The V6 engine with engine code LH0 was changed to the V6 engine with engine code L82, also known as 3100 SFI. Special versions of this model were also produced for police and taxi companies after production of the Chevrolet Caprice was discontinued in 1996.

A sportier version of the vehicle (Lumina LTZ) came on the market in early 1997 to replace the discontinued Impala SS and Caprice models . The version had sports bikes (similar to the style of the Impala SS), the 3.4-liter V6 engine (which was optionally available from 1997), a tachometer, and electrically adjustable seats.

The 3.4-liter V6 engine was swapped for the 3800 "Series II" engine in 1998, and the airbags were also improved around the same time.

General Motors stopped production on April 26, 2001. Chevrolet's sales of the Lumina were no longer profitable enough. In autumn 1999 the Chevrolet Impala came on the market again, which - now with front-wheel drive - functions as a successor, the Chevrolet Lumina was only sold for fleet operation from the same year. Among them is the Chevrolet Malibu .

In some Asian countries production of the Lumina continued and it was sold as the Buick Century / Regal. In Latin America, the Lumina was offered under the name Chevrolet Omega.
