The register office is in Switzerland a office for completion of the measures provided for in the Ordinance on Civil Status (zstv) tasks. This includes, among other things, the notarization of births, marriages, partnerships and deaths.

The more than 170 civil registry offices throughout Switzerland are divided into civil status districts, with each district consisting of one or more municipalities . The registry offices are under the direct supervision of the supervisory authority of their canton. All civil status events have been recorded in the central Infostar civil status register since 2005 .

Birth certificate
A birth certificate can be ordered from the registry office at any time. Depending on the intended use, a Swiss birth certificate (German, French, Italian) or an international CIEC birth certificate (5 languages) can be issued. Information from registers (e.g. time of birth) may only be given in the form of extracts (e.g. birth certificate), but not verbally.
Birth register
After receiving the necessary documents from the chosen hospital / birth center , the registry office will do the following:
  • Entry: The registry office enters the child in the birth register of the district.
  • Delivery of a birth certificate and the added family booklet or family ID (if available) to the parents.
  • Notification of birth to the parents' Swiss place of residence.
  • Notification of the birth to the guardianship authority of the mother's place of residence, provided the parents are not married.
  • Notification of the birth to the Federal Office for Migration if one of the parents is a recognized refugee, asylum seeker or temporarily admitted person.
  • Communication to the Federal Statistical Office.

The bride and groom must bring two mature and competent witnesses to the wedding ceremony. You must understand the wedding language and have a valid passport or identity card with you.
Marriage in Switzerland
In order to get married, the bride and groom must personally contact the registry office at the bride or groom's place of residence. The bride and groom must both be of legal age, i.e. at least 18 years old. The bride and groom must not be closely related to each other.
Every marriage is reported by the registry office at the place of marriage to the following offices:
  • Marriage notification to the Swiss place of residence
  • Announcement of the marriage to the Swiss place of birth of the common child
  • Marriage notification to the place of jurisdiction in Italy, Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein
  • Notification of the marriage to the Federal Office for Migration, provided that part or both of the couple is a recognized refugee, asylum seeker or temporarily admitted person.
  • Communication to the Federal Statistical Office
Same-sex partnerships
After those entitled to vote adopted the federal law on registered partnerships for same-sex couples on June 5, 2005, same-sex couples throughout Switzerland have been able to register their partnership with the civil registry office since January 1, 2007. The federal government has drawn up an information sheet from which the requirements and the legal effects of registering the partnership can be seen. A so-called preliminary procedure must be carried out before the partnership can be registered. To this end, the partners are asked to personally hand in the necessary documents to the civil registry office and at the same time to sign the declaration regarding the requirements for registering a partnership.

Deaths

Death certificate
When registering the death at the burial office, the bereaved can order a death certificate for the deceased. After the entry has been completed, the registry office automatically sends this to the relatives together with the family booklet. You can order a new death certificate for all deceased persons from the registry office at any time.
