Petit Le Mans 1999

In Road Atlanta, the BMW V12 LMR had to admit defeat to the works Panoz

The second Petit Le Mans , also 1999 Petit Le Mans, 1000 Miles at Road Atlanta, Road Atlanta , took place on September 18, 1999 in Road Atlanta and was the sixth round of the American Le Mans Series of that year.

The race

The big favorites for overall victory at the second Petit Le Mans were the BMW works cars . Used by Schnitzer Motorsport , the BMW V12 LMR had won two of the most important sports car races of the season. When 12-hour race at Sebring won JJ Lehto , Jorg Muller and Tom Kristensen . The number 15 BMW won the failed Le Mans 24-hour race , driven by Joachim Winkelhock , Pierluigi Martini and Yannick Dalmas .

In Road Atlanta Lehto and Müller formed a two-man team. In order to save the time involved in changing drivers, a third driver was omitted. The second works BMW was driven by Steve Soper , Bill Auberlen and Joachim Winkelhock. Strongest competition grew the BMW of the plant - Panoz LMP-1 Roadster S . The two teams of three consisted of David Brabham , Éric Bernard and Andy Wallace as well as Jan Magnussen , Johnny O'Connell and Memo Gidley .

Over the whole time there was a tight race between the BMW with the number 42 and the Panoz with the number 1. The two cars were almost always separated by only a few seconds. The race was decided by a driving mistake by Jörg Müller, who spun in the final phase and dropped back to third place. Brabham, Bernard and Wallace won by one lap ahead of the second BMW from Soper, Auberlen and Winkelhock.
