The BMW V12 LMR (abbreviation for L e M ans R oadster) is a sports car prototype developed for the Le Mans 24-hour race and the endurance championship . The racing car was used in sports car races from 1999 to 2000 and was the successor to the BMW V12 LM, which was used until 1998.

Vehicle concept

Basic technical information on the BMW V12 LMR

The BMW V12 LMR was a newly developed vehicle, but with the engine of the BMW V12 LM used until 1998. It was specially designed for durability. The development requirement was to double the Le Mans distance. The development goal was to drive through the race distance without damage and to avoid component changes.

The chassis development took place under BMW responsibility near Oxford . The development was independent of the preparations for the Formula 1 collaboration between BMW and Williams. The engine used in the BMW V12 LMR was the proven BMW S70B61 (6.1 V12) from the McLaren F1 , which had already won the overall classification of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995 .

Calls

In 1998, the use of the two BMW V12 LM at the 24 Hours of Le Mans ended early with damage to the wheel bearings . As a result, the car was completely rebuilt, the nose became slimmer and a single roll bar was installed.

1999 used by the team Schnitzer Motorsport , who won sports car that the American Le Mans Series is part of the 12-hour race at Sebring . Later in the season, the races in Sears Point , Laguna Seca and Las Vegas were also won. In the final ranking, Schnitzer was runner-up.

In June 1999, the BMW V12 LM with drivers Joachim Winkelhock , Pierluigi Martini and Yannick Dalmas achieved overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans . Basic performance, reliability and low fuel consumption were the deciding factors for the BMW V12 LMR to be the first to be flagged after 365 laps.

In 2000 the type was used again in the American Le Mans Series . With victories in Charlotte and Silverstone as well as eight further podium places (twice second, six times third), the BMW V12 LMR only had to admit defeat to the newly introduced Audi R8 in the final accounts .

The accident involving Bill Auberlen in Road Atlanta generated national media interest . Due to under air on the front axle when driving over a hill, the car overturned directly behind Lola from Team Rafanelli SRL, who was about to lap it.
