Petit Le Mans 2009

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The twelfth Petit Le Mans , also the 12th Annual Petit Le Mans powered by Mazda 6, Road Atlanta Grand Prix Road Course, Braselton , took place on September 26, 2009 in Road Atlanta and was the ninth round of the American Le Mans Series of that year.

The race

In 1998 , with the Petit Le Mans, a North American endurance race was created, which was derived from the Le Mans 24-hour race that had existed since 1923 . The duration of the race was 10 hours or 1000 miles. The race was waved when one of the two distances was reached. Since the success of Allan McNish , Rinaldo Capello and Michele Alboreto in the Audi R8 in 2002 , only Audi racing cars had won the overall standings.

In the first practice session, which took place on the Friday before race day, Scott Sharp had a serious accident in the Acura ARX-02a . After Turn 1 he collided with a Porsche 997 GT3 RSR coming out of the pits . The Acura overturned several times and came to rest on its side. Sharp was able to get out of the wreck unharmed and take part in the race in a newly constructed chassis. On the day of the race there were bad weather conditions, which led to the race being stopped after 185 laps. After 180 laps, the two Audi R15 TDIs of Allan McNish / Rinaldo Capello and Marco Werner / Lucas Luhr were just ahead of the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP of Stéphane Sarrazin / Franck Montagny and Pedro Lamy / Nicolas Minassian . First the two Audis came to the pits for a routine stop, then the two Peugeots. After all four cars had been processed, Montagny in the Peugeot was just ahead of McNish in the Audi, his team-mate Lamy and Marco Werner in the lead as the rain got heavier. First the second McNish turned and lost this position to Lamy. Marco Werner also lost his way. When the Drayson- Lola B09 / 60 crashed into a barrier, the race was stopped and because of the persistent heavy rain, it was not restarted .

The ranking after 184 laps became the official race result and the Peugeot from Montagny and Sarrazin the winner. This ended Audi's winning streak at Road Atlanta.
