Gerda Knebel

Gerda Knebel (born August 10, 1919 in Hamburg ; † July 20, 1992 there ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

After graduating from high school (1939), Knebel first studied at the college for teacher training , then from 1940 at the University of Hamburg (with Bruno Snell , Ulrich Knoche , Wolf-Hartmut Friedrich and Wolfgang Schmid ). She received her doctorate on September 14, 1949 with the dissertation Investigations on the derived presentations in Homer . From 1944 she worked as a private tutor in Bötersheim . From 1952 she worked at the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae as an employee of the Lexicon of the Early Greek Epic (LfgrE). Shortly thereafter, she began teaching at Hamburg University, where she was a lecturer for Greek language courses and style exercises from the 1954 summer semester. From 1957 to 1964 she was editor of the LfgrE. After her habilitation with the text Function and meaning of the particles αν and κε in the Homeric poems (1963), she published the fourth edition of the LfgrE (1965).

After leaving the editorial board of the LfgrE, she worked as a scientific adviser at the University of Hamburg. In 1966 she was appointed Senior Scientific Councilor and in 1971 Professor. Even after her retirement (1984), she continued to give lectures and seminars.

Gerda Knebel was buried in Hamburg's old Niendorfer cemetery , but the grave was abandoned after the rest period had expired.
