The Lime Rock Park is an American race track for motor sports . The route is in the state of Connecticut , near the village of Lime Rock . The track is owned by Skip Barber , a former racing driver and founder of the Skip Barber Racing School .

history

The route was opened in 1957 and was the first route that was constructed from a scientific point of view and the rules of highway safety at that time. The designers were Jim Vaill, son of the landowner on which the track was built, racing driver John Fitch and the Cornell Aeronautical Labs. Since the opening, the route had been specified as 1.53 miles, it was not until 2008 that this was corrected to 1.50 miles. Lime Rock Park is now best known for sports car racing . The event known today as the Northeast Grand Prix took place as early as 1958 as part of the SCCA National Sports Car Championship and has been held over 20 times since then.

In 2008 the track was redesigned a bit to reduce the speed a bit and to create better overtaking opportunities. Alternative variants have been added for the Up Hill and West Bend complexes of curves, so that four different variants can be driven today.

Most recently, the American Le Mans Series , the Rolex Sports Car Series and the Trans-Am series were active as national series. However, after the merger of the American Le Mans Series and the Rolex Sports Car Series into the United SportsCar Championship , the track no longer appears in the racing calendar for the 2014 season .

Routing

A lap of just 1.41 km (1.50 mi) long begins on the Sam Posey Straight , named after the racer who grew up near Lime Rock in 2013. This very long start / finish straight leads into the first corner, the Big Bend . This is followed by the Esses section , consisting of a left and a right curve, which leads to a short straight called the No Name Straight . Since 2008, the Uphill complex has been available either as a medium-speed right-hand bend or as a somewhat narrower chicane. Both variants go steeply uphill and lead to the back straight . Another complex follows with two different route variants. West Bend is either a fast right turn or a slower double right turn. Then it's downhill on a short straight and through the fast right-hand bend The Downhill back to the start / finish straight.
