The Chicago Motor Speedway was an oval course in Cicero , Illinois that opened in 1999. The circuit was 1,029 miles (1,656 km) in length and the curves were not banked, unlike other courses of this type. The Chicago Grand Prix of the Champcar World Series and twice the Sears Craftsman 175 of Chicago of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series were held here.

history

Originally it was a horse racing track. This was called Sportsman's Park. They were created in the 1920s by the Al Capone syndicate . Later the co-owner Charles Bidwill took over the racetrack. Bidwill had bought the Chicago Cardinals football team back in 1933 . After Bidwill's death in 1947, his widow Violet Bidwill took control. Later, their son Charles "Stormy" Bidwill Jr. became the owner of the circuit. His son Charles Bidwill III. allied with Chip Ganassi in the late 1990s to transform the horse racing track into an automobile race track. New grandstands were built and the racetrack was paved. The direct competition to the Chicagoland Speedway , which was opened in 2001 , as well as the conditions that are unacceptable for horse racing led to the financial fiasco. Eventually the circuit was sold to the county and demolished in 2003.
