Manuel Ocampo (* 1965 in Quezon City ) is a Filipino painter .

Manuel Ocampo studied Fine Art at the University of the Philippines from 1984 to 1985 . He continued his studies at California State University . He later emigrated to Seville , Spain. Ocampo returned to the Philippines in 2003 and lives in Manila . He is married and has four kids.

His work is influenced by punk and cartoons and combines religious elements of the baroque with secular, political stories. Ocampo uses allegories and metaphors to the colonialism to criticize. On his canvases he shows a variety of symbols that refer to art history and literature. Among other things, crosses, teeth, emoticons , sausages, swastika , feces and flowers can be seen.

Manuel Ocampo was represented at numerous internationally important exhibitions. In 1992 he was a participant in documenta IX in Kassel, in 1993 and 2001 in the Venice Biennale , in 2000 in the Berlin Biennale and in 2004 in the Seville Biennale.

Ocampo's work has won the Lila Wallace Artists at Giverny Award , the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Rome Prize .

Phillip Rodriguez shot the film Manuel Ocampo, God Is My Copilot (1998), an hour-long documentary about Manuel Ocampo's life and career as an artist.

The 1992 painting Why I Hate Europeans by Ocampo was used as the album cover for Mythmaker (2007) by Skinny Puppy .
