Pasay (officially: City of Pasay ; Filipino Lungsod ng Pasay ) is a major city in the Philippines and part of the metropolitan area of Metro Manila . The city borders directly on Manila Bay with an approximately 3.5 km long stretch of coast . The capital Manila joins in the north, the neighboring cities Makati and Taguig in the east and Parañaque City in the south . Pasay was named a city on June 21, 1947 with a population of 88,000. Then the city was briefly called Rizal City , named after the Filipino national hero José Rizal . Two years later, however, the city was given its previous name again in 1949. It bears this name to this day and now has 416,522 inhabitants (census August 1, 2015).

There are several theories about the origin of the city's name, but no historically secure records. Most likely, the name of the city goes back to the Princess Dayang-Dayang Pasay from the Namayan kingdom. The Kingdom of Namayan with the capital Sapa (today: Santa Ana , a district in the city of Manila ) extended in the 12th century from Manila Bay to Laguna de Bay . Princess Dayang-Dayang Pasay inherited the lands that today include, among other things, the current area of Pasay.

The city is part of Metro Manila's tourism belt and is visited by many travelers, not least because of the attractive location on Manila Bay and the countless restaurants, bars and shops, especially along Roxas Boulevard . The Mall of Asia , one of the largest shopping centers in the Philippines, opened in May 2006, is also a particular magnet for visitors . The Ninoy Aquino Airport is also located in the urban area of Pasay. There are good transport links to the surrounding cities on the one hand via the main traffic arteries Roxas Boulevard and EDSA and on the MRT 3 and LRT 1 lines of the S-Bahn system .

Administratively, the city is divided into 201 barangays , whereby these do not have individual names, but are only numbered from Barangay 1 to Barangay 201 .
