Caloocan ( Tagalog : Kalookan ) is a large city in the Philippines . It is part of the metropolitan area of Metro Manila and with 1,583,978 inhabitants (as of August 1, 2015)the fourth largest city in the countryafter Quezon City , Manila and Davao City .

The name Caloocan comes from the Tagalog and is derived from the root word lo-ok ; kalook-lookan (or kaloob-looban ) means something like "innermost area". This applies geographically at least to the southern part of Caloocan, which is surrounded by the cities of Manila , Navotas City , Malabon City , Valenzuela City and Quezon City .

Caloocan consists of two parts that are not spatially connected to one another. The southern part borders immediately north on Manila . The northern part, on the other hand, is on the edge of Metro Manila and is separated from Caloocan-Süd by the city of Valenzuela . A University of the East campus is located in Caloocan .
