Calibo

Kalibo is a Filipino township in the Aklan Province in the northwest of Panay Island . Kalibo is the seat of the provincial government of Aklan Province. The Kalibo wetlands extend southeast of the municipality .

history

From the time of the Spanish colonial administration to the introduction of the national language Filipino in 1946, the spelling of the place name was Calivo.

The name is derived from the Aklanon term sangka libo (German: one thousand), the number of locals who attended the first Catholic mass. After this very first fair, the Ati-atihan Festival was held annually to commemorate this event .

Economy and Infrastructure

Agriculture is the most important branch of the economy. The main agricultural products are rice and coconuts . Kalibo is also a center of the piña textile industry. Textiles from Piña and Abacá are exported to numerous regions of the world, in particular to North America. Handbags made from Buri leaves , made by locals, are especially popular with tourists.
