tourism

The approximately 3.5 km long White Beach, Diniwid Beach on the west side and the neighboring island of Crocodile Island are tourist attractions. The island is suitable for divers. Lush coral reefs and large fish make interesting dives possible . In the months of November to April the north-east trade wind blows, which enables kite- or windsurfing at Bulabog Beach on the east side of the island .

The extensive bay measures up to approx. 600 m to the horizon and has a water depth of 70 to 100 cm. In addition to diving , golf and sailing , all water fun sports such as banana boating, jet skiing, wakeboarding and snorkeling are possible on White Beach .

Due to the countless restaurants, bars and discos that are open every day until late at night, many party tourists come to the island. From time to time cruise ship passengers visit White Beach.

Renovation and new rules for the tourism industry from 2018

Foreigners and tourists were denied access to the island from April 26 to October 15, 2018. The reason for this was the wild growth of the vacation industry , under which the tropical paradise threatens to collapse: illegal buildings, littered coastline and sewage that is discharged directly into the sea. Boracay has become a sewer, complained President Rodrigo Duterte , who is known for his directness . "The sea smells like shit," he added bluntly.

Since the island reopened, new rules apply to the islands. Amongst other things:

  • Deck chairs, umbrellas, alcohol, eating and smoking are strictly prohibited on the beach.
  • Boracay can only be entered with a corresponding hotel booking and can only be approached or left via the southern harbor ("Jettyport") of the island with approved boats.
  • Souvenir shops on White Beach are closed, hawkers not allowed.
  • Suckling pig grilling is prohibited near the beaches.

Residents

The population is 32,267 on the entire island (August 2018), of which 12,296 in Balabag, 14,810 in Manoc-Manoc and 5,161 in Yapak. In 2010, however, there were only 28,369 people on the island. Counting locals, emigrants and tourists together, around 30,000 people are permanently on the island.

The most commonly spoken languages are Tagalog , Cebuano and Aklanon , and almost everyone understands English . Job opportunities are mainly limited to tourism and include hotel and restaurant services and, to a lesser extent, traditional fishing.

Infrastructure

There has been electricity on Boracay since 1991. Recently roads and a new police station have been built. There are doctors, a medical center and a hospital.

There is a small market for shopping, the Talipapa, and a newer, more modern market, the De Mall. There is also a shop in the tourist center and all over Boracay there are countless stalls with a wide variety of offers. A department store, the Crafts, and a large supermarket, the Budget Market, are also available. Restaurant and hotel hotspots are available for almost the entire length of White Beach. The cellular network is also well developed.

Boracay Airport (identification MPH; also called Godofredo P. Ramos Airport) is located on the neighboring island of Caticlan. From there, the flight time to Manila and Cebu is about an hour each.
